yes, gifts do count

To add to what NoUserNameHere said, just make sure that the evolution does not require you to trade with another Pokémon. For example, Karrablast needs to be traded with a Shelmet in order for it to evolve. In this case, gifting will not work. But anything that just needs to be traded will be perfectly fine as gifts.

I know this post is old, but if you're trying to send more than 6 of the same item in a trade, do you have to just make multiple trades or is there an easier way to do it?
