Okay, this will be a long post. Will separate things into accordion tabs for the person who said the thing, but I encourage everyone to read through this post - I know it's a lot, believe me I know (I spent over two hours on this - started at 11:40pm EST) but I explain a lot of things. ^^

I have a few tiny critiques and compliments. ;w; - Melan Chikorita was bright and fun and happy but now they look a bit wilted. ;-; - New Melan Teddiursa is mildly upsetting. I liked the hot pink. + On the other hand, Melan and albino Cyndaquil line is AH!! I CAN'T EVEN DESCRIBE HOW SWEET THEY LOOK! Fantastic! I want several- ;0; + Albino misdreavus line also looks killer, I love it. + The redone mega sprites are adorable, the Mega Ampharos pose is just the cutest. He looks ready to save the day, a 10/10 from me.
- They were also incredibly saturated and very out of place - weren't consistent at all. Bright butter-yellow leaves and a black body isn't how the normal works. - The hot pink was also wildly inconsistent - the markings are lighter than the body and not super saturated. + Glad you like these! These seem to be super popular + wait til you see the melans - hands down in my top 5, if not top 3 for line updates. + Yee, Novie was super proud of this one. :)

I'll miss the old melan Meganium sprite though, I really liked the brighter flower and the bright color of the mouth. The new melan looks good, it just doesn't stand out as much
It's called melanistic, not "neon" or "rave party" IMO melanistic should be true to the name. An abundance of melanin.
So... (speaking as a geneticist here), how exactly do pokemon have to follow the laws of nature? Ultimately everything is up to the site artist's discretion, and yeah they're currently toning everything down, but what's wrong with missing a version that someone liked? I miss a lot of the contrast within the melans. Nothing about pokemon really follows traditional science, from their evolution pattern to the fact that shinies exist. The whole thing is meant to be fun, following science to a tee just...isn't necessary. It's possible for them to have an abundance of melanin and still have pretty colors to them too, so I see no harm in wishing or wanting for variation from the muddier dark colors. Sure some melans look a lot better with the recolor, but some are just unappealing to a lot of people now, as is the sake of every art change for anything. Doesn't exactly make sense to tell someone that missing something they enjoyed is wrong *shrug*
While true, we go based off the color pallette more than anything, so we try to stick to how the palletes are rather than "does this thing have melanin in it?" like you said, it's pokemon, so we do have our fun with it.

most of these updates are pretty nice, theres some i dont like but oh well its just my opinion will miss some of those brighter colours as usual, but a lot of the new ones are cooler than before. i really enjoy the new mega ampharos sprite, its super cute and has so much character now <3 the melan looks a lot better now, though that shade of green just doesnt feel very electric or fitting for a cute little sheep imo? still, it's way nicer than that old one lol i like this region's revamp a lot better than kanto's so far, though i still feel like there isnt very much diversity between melans and albinos as most seem to be similar shades of dark brown/green/purple and pink/lavender/mint/cyan respectively. not saying those colours are bad, but i think theres colour combos that couldve been more pleasing to the eye without breaking consistency. i do appreciate the cleaner lines and shading a lot though, nearly all the revamps have much better looking sprites. c:
Like Shazi mentioned above, we try to not use colors that were present on the normal or shiny sprites, so the albinos and melans tend to lean towards colors that weren't used in them - these just happened to be an abundance of blues and purples this time around.

While I LOVE the new Melan Cynda line I'll definitely miss the green since I like that just... ever so slightly better x3 (Waah mixed feelings. They're both just so pretty, new and old.) I also love the melan Yanma colors and the Yanmega colouring suits it well too :3 The only one I'm a little disappointed in is the Melan Electabuzz as it doesn't have the reversed black and yellow colours that it used to have, but ahh well it still looks decent~ xP
Electabuzz, Sunkern, and Raikou suffered from that same thing you mentioned - parts that were meant to be darker (or black) were suddenly lighter than the body, which was very inconsistent. :p

I love a majority of these updates so much, my Noctowl is such a pretty boy now. ;w; And I have a bunch of new melan hunts to add to my list... the melan cyndaquil line is calling my name. Not super happy with the change to melan houndoom. The blue face makes them look like a clown and is really unappealing. It looks okay on houndour because the body is darker too, but on the evos the contrast is just too much.
normal and shiny Houndour/doom have orangeypink and yellow snouts respectively. They just look more 'normal' because they were pair with colors that make them look not so out of place.

QUOTE originally posted by Cerberus

Hmm... I'm not really enjoying most of the revamps, they look a little too dull for my taste and seem to repeat a rather washed out green, blue or in between. It works for some revamps like Heracross, Gliscor and the Cyndaquil line. With the Houndour line, I think the blue sort of works with Houndour and Houndoom, but not so much Mega Houndoom. Like, the colours are nice, but the blue doesn't really seem to fit in with all the bone? Though I suppose if it was like a mowed grass green it'd be a tad bit worse. I think the same can be said with Larvitar's line. Larvitar and Tyranitar (including the mega) look a little too odd with the main colour looking like pain water, but Pupitar still looks great, so I'm a little hesitant with evolving it now. I mentioned the line before, but Cyndaquil's albino and melan lines look great! Although Typhlosion's mouth looks a little odd ahaha The Megas that were revamped look great! Especially Ampharos, who looks like it came straight out of a PMD game as a Guild Master. TL;DR- This revamp has its ups n downs, especially to each their own, but I still look forward and slightly fear the next revamp!
I can see the argument for mega houndoom, but imagine how it'd look with white bone. This is why we use an 'aged bone' sort of effect for the melans since having something stark white on a melan looks.. well, odd. But have you seen shiny mega houndoom? Red snout, blue body, white horns. It looks sun burned. :P I'm not sure I follow with what you're saying for Larvitar - my apologies. ^^ I'm glad you like the rest though :)

I just... why is albino entei that shade of green? And I loved albino suicune for it's pink colours... I am loving the new sprites don't get me wrong, I'm just almost shocked at how much they changed... I loved how pink they used to be
Also like Shazi mentioned, it's not green - is bloo. Albino suicune was wildly inconsistent as well: + The mane should be a different color from the body - the old one didn't reflect this. + The crown is darker than the body, but the same color. could be adjusted to be a little darker. + On the old one, it was hard to distinguish the spots from the body + The new one was made to have the body more pigmented, keeping the pink and changing the made to an icy blue.

QUOTE originally posted by Näerie

Okay. So I think I've worked out my issue with the dog trio. I think what trips me out with suicune is it suddenly got darker? And I think the horn being the same colour as the body doesn't sit right with me. I just remember hunting suicune due to the strawberry milk feel to it's colours, the pink mane was a selling point for me. ♡ can I just say how much I love the melan though? ♡♡♡ Entei is green? I liked the toasty pale colours from before. I'm intrigued as to why a cooler pallet was chosen for a firey Pokemon. Raikou looks like a dulled down version of the normal one. The colours work really well together mind you, but the cinnamon pallet from before felt nicer? So that's just my thoughts. But what's done is done. I'll get over it eventually I'm sure~ Nice job this round though art team! We all appreciate your hard work. ♡♡♡
Like mentioned in my othrer response, the normal isn't super light - there is some pigmentation, so we made the body pink and made it so the spots were more visible. As for why that pallette was chosen for a firey pokemon, well.. I mean.. they firey colors were already used for the normal and shiny. xD While the Raikou pallette was nice, the stripes should've been much darker than the body - not only marginally darker. Also, can I just say how I love you compare them to food? Yer so adorable <333

normals are used to base the albinos and shinies are used for melans in which case the melan azumarill makes perfect sense
I hope I don't sound rude, but if that's the case, why wasn't suicune given a darker horn? After all the official art does show it's horn is darker in colour. Bulbapedia link
That's the official artwork, though. We go based off of sprite work, and the horn on the sprite, to cut down on colors, uses the same colors wherever it can. If you look closely at suicune, you'll see that it appears like the body doesn't really have any shading.. but upon closer examination, you see why: [youtube]IDKAWbe0Z70[/youtube]

The new Mega Ampharos sprite has personality... But what about the Kanto Megas? Why didn't they get updated?
At the time we didn't think to update the kanto megas since we were in the middle of Mega Lookback and doing OTHER megas. We had a lot more on our plate at the time - they will be updated though. A few were revamped, but not all. I know Novie responded to ya, but I'm just adding on ;)

I wouldve left it as be. Dulled the colours down a little bit if it was considered too neon. I understand that some if not most melan sprites were made a VERY long time ago. And im aware the artists check this thread. They did swell with the sprites they actually had to make themselves. im also being a miffed babby at this probably mostly because that my favourites are getting mostly turnt into black blobs. inb4 phione becomes neon disco party.
Shiny sunflora, when compared to the normal, absolutely looks wilted and hella desaturated. This was reflected in the melan. Also, they ain't turning into black blobs. :( If we wanted them to be black blobs, they'd all be very dark with no color pop at all. Give us a little more credit, yeah?

@art team think about customer satisfaction - people PAY to hunt for these melans. If multiple people are saying "Melan chikorita is too dull" or "melan houndour's colors are too weird" ... perhaps something has to be done. ;u; Also consider another artists' search. Some people are better with something drawn on-model, and others are better with color. Try focusing on that. I know plenty of artists who aren't great with anatomy or anything like that, but DANG they are good at picking out colors. Take me for example, I am not very good with anatomy, posing, and general character design, but I feel like I am much better when it comes to colors and what works well together. I saw the previous one, and it requires you to be able to draw a good sprite from scratch. This is unfair to people who are potentially "better" at designing melans but are unable to draw a sprite perfectly in the gen 5 sprite style. Or perhaps think about this, in animation, there tends to be people who focus on the sketching, people who focus on coloring, and then there's clean-up artists who see if something's off. Why not have a group of people who are like the "test viewers" or they pick out the melan colors if something is off.
We never once said we wouldn't consider changing colors. Customer satisfaction is very important to us, but so is making the site look like it wasn't made by someone with no sense of color coordination or style. Like you mentioned, neon rave parties are coming to an end, so the stark contrast between old-and-new is very apparent. While we understand that users hunted or bought certain albinos and melans because they liked the old palette, we NEVER hid the fact that these were getting updated and some of their favorites are going to be changing. We never hid this and stated bltantly, on more than one occassion, that things are changing and unfortunately, that's what must happen in order for us to improve. People are allowed to not like something - that's fine. I've actually got a spriter application drafted, but they won't go up until after Garth and Niet settle into their new house because.. it's a large task to bring new people on and with Niet and Garth in the middle of moving, and, ultimately, making the administrative decisions (don't get me wrong, Artists are my thing and they trust me to hire people, but they're MY bosses) they want to be comfortable with where they are so we can properly integrate members into our team. I want a focus on people who can do scratch work - recolors are covered. I need people who can build something from either a concept or nothing. ^^; The art team we have now is very varied and we work very well together - we know eachother's strengths and weaknesses, so we help eachother and encourage growth where applicible. Any one given sprite is usually the effort of 2-3 artists - rarely is one sprite fully done by one person.

I agree with Cerberus. I mentioned this on a different thread, but going off on the color changes of green and such, I personally do not understand it, especially considering the fact that most albinos that got changed to some sort of green (and other varying colors) had already fit the description of albinos. I'm not saying albinos need to follow the strict definition of whites/reds/pinks, and that there can't be variety, but as it stands now I feel like the albinos are well... losing their meaning of being an albino, and instead fit more closer to a definition of leucistic. [snip] Of course, this critique could also be applied to other albinos, whose color schemes changed to either being a bland color or a dull color compared to their previous versions, which might fit better. I'm not saying I hate all of the revamps; some made the sprites better than other. But my feelings towards the revamp isn't because it's a change that I haven't gotten used to; it's because of the fact that I feel like certain revamps just downgraded the sprites instead of being the upgrade they were supposed to be (prime example, Melan Houndoom).
Mentioning this first part since Shazi addressed the others. On the albino radar page, you can see that you're absolutely correct: As for the rest, things can always be reviewd and re-adjusted - we're flexible and always open to community feedback. ^^

[snip] I also have to question, as always, why so many albinos and melans were changed to green... I calculated it out before and less than 2% of Johto's (albino) sprites were green... that number has increased considerably. As I've said these green albinos/melans are a growing trend - but I don't know why and no one on the art staff has ever taken the time to explain to me or anyone else (that I can see) why green is the trend for Pokemon. Is it just someone's favorite color? Did they do a poll and like a majority of Pokemon users prefer Green over all colors? Green is also really hard to work with when you consider other colors; it doesn't really work well with... anything, depending on the shade of green. Even black, which works well with almost any color, can work poorly with some greens (see: Houndoom complaints section). I just don't understand why green is the chosen color to work with and change all these sprites to when it's so limiting, and not a color seen in... any mammals, as far as I know to begin with. Reptiles, sure. Plants? Sure! Those Pokemon make sense. But so many Pokemon ARE based on mammals that it's just... weird to me. It doesn't make sense artistically - it's limiting, and it only really combines well with lighter creams/whites/etc especially on the albinos with that strange zombie blue green - and it doesn't make sense biologically or realistically for a large majority of Pokemon. My two cents on the Great Green Debate of 2018 as always.
removed the first bit since Shazi explained for you. "I'd like to see proof of your work" is what I'd like to say, but I know that it's silly considering that.. well, a majority of them were 'black' with really bright colors, so this is invalid. of course it'd increase, but you can say that with LITERALLY any other color that the melans have become: red melans have increased blue melans have increased purple melans have increased ..of course they did - because they're now pigmented and not 'make me black but make my secondary a bright color'. What exactly do you have against green albinos and melans? Is it that much of an issue? Green wasn't a color used very much in normal or shiny colorations which is why it might be used in more places, but like i said - the same can be said for other colors as well. Honestly, it just appears as if you dislike green and want to campaign against it. I'm also a little confused as to why you say green doesn't really work with anything - there are so many shades of green ranging from yellow-green to blue-green. It's arguably one of the colors that work best.

Again, it's.. really not. There are tons of others that aren't green and it wasn't the color chosen to be there for all albinos and melans - to say this is incorrect. Also, you say that this isn't a color seen in mammals, etc.. and that pokemon are based on mammals, etc. So you'd prefer the neon-rave melans and washed out albinos? Those are what are seen in Pokémon when they're so colorful and full of life? From what you're saying, it would appear that you'd prefer the old albino Natu () with one color scheme rather than the updated one where there are actual distinguishable colors () like the normal () has? LOTS of non mammals are green - birds, fish, amphibians, etc. like you mentioned, but.. this is Pokemon. They don't need to follow the logic that mammals do in their coloration and nor do we. Just because a pokemon is mammalian based doesn't mean it can't also be green. What about Electrike? Electrike is naturally green, and definitely not a plant or reptile. Taurous, Stantler, Ursaring, Wingull, Azurill, Espeon all have green shinies. Also not plants or reptiles.

and it's not pink because the normal is pink. we specifically make them not look like pale versions of the normals and shinies.
I just don't understand... why even call them albinos if you're specifically trying to not make them albinos? EDIT: From the Albino Hunting page: An Albino Pokémon is much the same as a regular Pokémon, but white or very pale! Also, I unfortunately don't know about the brown melan situation; it's not just albinos that are getting green, though. For example: Spinarak, Mareep, Bonsly, Sunkern's Line, Gliscor, Snubbull, Remoraid, Delibird (semi), Houndoom's line, Hitmontop, Electabuzz/Electivire, Pupitar/Tyranitar/Mega Tyran, Lugia, and the Azurill I mentioned earlier ALL changed from a different color to green or off-green. And that's just going through the melans, not all of which have been discovered yet. I also did not count melans who changed from green to darker green, like Yanma. [snip] I'm not saying that it's not okay to ever use green. What I am saying is that there's a lot of green lately with no explanation. Not just in albinos, in melans as well. Mega Dewgong is a good example - Dewgong and Seel both had their melans, which were a neutral grey-ish black changed to a green-based black. Green is a wonderful color - and there should be green everything. Green shinies, green albinos, green melans. Yet there needs to be variety. Green is such an overwhelmingly common color that it's hard not to notice its prevalence lately.
A couple that you listed aren't green, at all. Sunkern for example. And Bonsly only has been on its pseudo leaves? The body isn't green. Again, its just coming off like you hate green or anything remotely having a trace of green on it when it works and fits well. I don't think you've seen the shinies or how some of these patterns work like we have - we've spend months staring at sprites, noticing how the colors change between normal and shiny, watching how the colors flip and switch between the lines, how there's an odd-one-out in a line, etc. We're very much aware of these patterns and while we're at it, let's talk about dewgong. Dewgong's shiny is yellow-white. That means it's pigmented. This is why the melan is green. The melan isn't blue because the normal is blue-white. It's not purple because the albino is pink, and purple would be too close to pink. This is why it's green - because it's far away enough that it works -- blue and yellow aren't that close to eachother. Nor are pink and green.
