Affection is for evolution/breeding specific pokemon. Eevee > Sylveon, Rockruff > Lycanroc (Dusk) Breeding wise you need it to breed a kinaster egg. Doesn't have anything to do with contest to my knowledge (It's also not even mentioned on this guide anywhere or on the WIKI that it has anything to do with pokemon contest), but if you're looking to raise a pokemons affection you'll need "perfect berries" depending on the pokemons berry preference you'll need a specific perfect berry.
