The celebrations of Yule outstrip the Christian holiday of Christmas, though the two have been blended considerably. In the Old Norse language, Jól referred to Yule; the celebration held upon Midwinter Night. It was also a reference to the gods- Odin carrying the name of jólfaðr, or Yule-father, and the Norse gods together were jólnar; the Yule-beings. Yule is a celebration of the light returning to the world- on the longest, darkest night of the year, candles were lit, and a full tree (the Yule Log) was burned to celebrate the 'rebirth' of the sun. This part of tradition is reflected in the modern Yule Log (no longer a full tree), and strings of coloured lights draped around the tree. ~*~ The second part of her name is 'Kisa', which was a feminine noun, the modern rquivalent of which would be 'kitty'.
