I'm gonna throw my hat into the ring here, srry for long post in advance, TLDR is at the bottom. Just gonna put them all in hideboxes so that way y'all don't have a big long whopping mega post to scroll past qwq

Issues Other Users have raised

1) the whole issue with "sun-blessed/moon-blessed" mons (raised by sneaky shadow and other users) PFQ isn't a religious-based site and words with very religious connotations should be avoided since not only can it make people who were treated badly by religions uncomfy, I could also see it rub people who are religious the wrong way by implying a sense of "sacredness" to the 'mons. While it does sound cool (imo) and would fit in a fantasy game quite well...I think it should be avoided. 2) Not all albinos are white with pink eyes on the site anymore/not all melans are black on the site anymore Like Didi96 says in this post, albino =/= white with pink eyes. That's the common depiction of them in media, but it's not technically correct. Also, as other people have mentioned this is a game about made up creatures in a theoretical world ^_^ it's okay if the A/M mons made dont' exactly match the common depictions in the real world. I mean, we have a land tortise turtle (whichever one torterra is) with a tree growing out of its shell and a slug made of living lava. Those defy biological conventions of the real world too. We don't have to be 1000000% accurate to science here 3) Sun and Moon related names There's Pokemon Sun, Pokemon Moon, Pokemon Ultra Sun, and Pokemon Ultra Moon. The first thing I think of when I hear "sun and moon" involving Pokemon are the four gen 7 games and the new Pokemon specifically introduced in that gen. The second thing is Solrock and Lunatone. I think too many people will get confused. Also, aside from one cycle of the moon, it's bright. Melanistic pokemon are not bright. They are dark-colored. I personally don't think a moon-related name makes sense for them at all due to this. 4) Greek underworld names ohmigosh I SEE GREEK MYTHOLOGY STUFF AAAAAAH okay fangirl moment over. Look, I love greek mythology as much as the next guy, gal, trans or enbie pal but they definitely sound ominous and evil. While I would totally *love* Stygian mons it's got heavy underworld relations, perhaps a bit *too* heavy. And while yes, there *is* stygian blue as pointed out by @mikestarprince, most people hear stygian their first line of thought is "greek underworld"... As for lethian/lemosyne it's a very abstract concept at best. Most people have not heard of the river lethe, and even if they have I don't know how many people would make the jump from "washing away memories" to "washed out in color" Would make for a great concept for maybe a variant or exclusive down the line, but I don't think it really fits. My greek mythos fangirl will be crying in a corner over it if anyone wants to join me :( 5) Why change the names now? Yeah I gotta agree on this...like I get that the mons are moving away from the "traditional" white albinos and black melans, but the names have been in use for ages! People aren't going to just stop using the names and s/a/m acronym on here. I think if a name change happens it should *only* be on pokefarm new.

My own personal takes on some name replacement categories

6) Day/Night/Dawn/Dusk/pretty much any time-related name They're cool but also I could totally see people being confused over the fact that the time of day you hatch the mon does not matter in the calculations that happen behind the scenes to determine if the 'mon is albino or melan. 7) Any of the ones that have meaning conflict with a Pokemon nature "I collect relaxed mons" okay do you mean the nature or the melan? it's way too easy to get them mixed up. I think it also diminishes the meanings a lot since non-specials can still be "relaxed" or "bold" this is also the reason why I'm on the fence about "Enigma"...yeah it sounds really cool but also it's a berry, and while admittedly berries aren't a super big deal on the site I think it should still probably be avoided. 8) All the names that are big long words that most people aren't gonna know what they mean So uh...before this thread how many people honestly knew what piebald, nacreous, nimbus, picem, tenebrous, calinginous, crepuscle, argent, and/or gloam meant? Cause I sure didn't. A lot of them just sound weird (I want a piebald pokemon, calinginous zeraora for sale). Unlike albino or melan, or even ones like opalescent, bright, gleaming, or luminous, their connection to the Pokemon's coloration isn't readily apparent. I peronally think they are too complex to grasp and that the younger members of the site will have trouble doing such 9) Pastel, Ebony, Indigo, and Vanta If we are going to change albinos to something else because "not all albinos fit the stereotypical appearance of albinism in mammals", we shouldn't do pastel either because not all albinos on the site are pastel. Same logic applies to ebony and indigo for melans - not all melans on the site are black or dark blue-purple. Most people aren't going to get vanta as a name because vantablack is not super well known imo. Plus it's opposite is literally pink atm since the *only* guy who can use vantablack is also the *only* one who can't use the world's pinkest pink paint and uh...not all albinos are pink.

Names I support

for albinos, I like luminous, prismatic, opalescent, pearlescent, iridescent, and bright. I think they all do a good job describing that albinos have a lighter color pallet than normal. The *only* problem I could potentially see with any of them is the fact that there are illumina 'mons now in New Pokemon Snap, and since we're avoiding shadow as an option for the melans due to the presence of shadow pokemon in the gamecube games and in pokemon go, luminous and lumina should probably be avoided for the same reason. For melans, I guess gleaming is my favorite of the ones listed in the main post. Maybe inky too, although that lacks the aspect of "omg so rare" that gleaming has.

TLDR

1) Blessed names should be avoided due to their religious connotations that could make a lot of current users uncomfortable 2) The game is based on made up creatures, we don't need to stick to the definitions of albinism and melanism in mammals when even in our real world other types of creatures (such as reptiles) have non-white albinos. 3) Sun and Moon related names will probably cause too much confusion with the official games, leading to misconceptions of the specials only applying to 'mons from that region 4) Most of the greek underworld related names for albinos are abstract to the extreme and most people won't get the logic behind naming them such. Stygian, although the name of a color, has a lot of negative/evil connotations associated with it. It would, however, make a cool name/theme for a variant perhaps 5) If the names are changed it should only be on PFN since most people on PFQ are gonna use the old names anyways 6) Time-related names, while sounding cool (I mean twilight pokemon or eclipsian pokemon sound epic, amiright?) will probably lead to misconceptions or confusion about having to hatch the 'mons during that specific time of day to get the special (ie melans only hatch at twilight server time, albinos only hatch during the day) and should probably be avoided. 7) Names that have a conflict with official pokemon natures should be avoided since it can make it unclear if a person is looking for a special or for a pokemon of that nature. Enigma also has this issue since it shares a name with a berry, albeit one of the rarest ones in the main games 8) A lot of the names suggested are obscure synonyms/antonyms for white/light colored or black/dark colored. Most people aren't going to understand why these were selected once it's been a while and this thread's a distant memory. I think they should be avoided for simpler names. 9) If we are going by the logic of "not all albinos are white so we shouldn't call them albinos" and "not all melans are black so we shouldn't call them melans", then pastel, indigo, and ebony do not work either since not all albinos are pastel, not all melans are indigo, and not all melans are ebony (black). same goes for other words that generally mean one color, such as obsidian or vanta(black). Names I like for Albino: luminous, lumina, pearlescent, opalescent, iridescent, bright Names I like for Melan: gleaming, inky Suggestions: Pallid or Pale for albino. Pallid I'm iffy on because again, like my point #8, not a lot of people will know what it means (it's pale, btw), but both play into the fact that albinos are *paler* than regular mons. I have no suggestions for melans. It's a difficult term to encapsulate since most dark-colored terms are either related to the night or have not great connotations.
