Persephone had decided to give birth to her baby in the Underworld, having made the excuse of Olympus being too cold. She had known that it would soon be found out that Hades was the father to her child. Not only that, she knows Hades wanted to at least meet their child before having to send them off to a new home per Zeus' ruling that Gods are not allowed to be in contact with their offspring.
Luckily, the fates had agreed to be midwives. Though it wasn't everyday a child of the big three was born. Let alone with two God parents. Clotho had already begun to weave the child's fate before Persephone even knew she was pregnant. She had brought the the thread she had been weaving with her whilst she wore a sly grin.
Lachesis was still unsure of how much longer she should let her sister weave. She could already tell that Atropos was anxiously waiting to cut where she is told. The trio had still been contemplating when they arrived to the Underworld for their volunteer work that had doubled as a normal visit. Although they stopped for the time being since they can always come back to the matter.
Atropos looked to the two gods with her empty eye sockets with an almost somber expression. "We can give you a few months of cover to find someone to take the child. This way you don't have to be in a big rush." She had already seen all the details and wanted so desperately to do more but all the fates were allowed to tell was little snippets that were vague at best.
"To keep Zeus from that you wish to hide
You must find a kindred soul for which to confide.
Long will the king wonder where to seek
But only you will get to peek.
You may use thy helm
To find a distant realm.
Far from their place of birth
The child will find their mirth"
Clotho didn't even look up when giving the advice. She was focused on her weaving, not showing any signs of stopping any time soon.
Hades stared at her for a moment before turning to the others. "Anything else you wish to warn us about?"
"It's a bit late for it but you are going to be one dragon soul short on your next count. It was the only one compatible for the kid." Lachesis got things set up as similarly to a human delivery room as she can to help ease the birth for Persephone.
"What?" Hades looked dumbfounded. He wanted to check what she meant but figured he'd know soon enough with the birth anyways.
"Don't worry. Clotho is weaving in checks for the powers so they don't get too out of control. At least nothing that can't be handled. Atropos had the idea to have them be unlocked as the child grows and seem like they aren't from either of you to keep them hidden from Zeus and whatever monsters he sends after them." Lachesis knows what the child will be born as - all three sisters do - but they are keeping the air of mystery alive for the God's sakes.
"And to help whomever they see fit. Of course due to the dragon soul and Hades' ability to shapeshift, I'll tell you now - and of course you can tell the adopter if you wish - the child will be able to utilize the power of that dragon and has a high chance of turning into a dragon with firebreath." A look of awe and pride was in Atropos' eyes. She seemed as if she had been looking forward to sending a dragon back out on earth in some way, shape, or form.
Persephone got excited at this news and was looking forward to being a sort of fly on the wall parent. She rubbed her belly, seemingly to just ease a kick. In reality, Persephone had just been silently casting a spell on her unborn child to be able to adapt to whatever environment she's raised in a lot easier. "Shall we inform Rhea once the baby is here? I'm sure she'd like to meet her grandchild at least once."
The fates all look at each other and nod, agreeing that it would in fact wise to invite the Titaness over. It wouldn't be that long of a boat ride if there was one. Clotho took a small break from her weaving and sent an Oneiroi down the River Phlegthon, destined for Tartarus. "Don't know how long it'll take her but-" she shrugs and goes back to weaving.
Lachesis and Atropos get Persephone ready and makes sure she's as comfortable as possible since even for the gods, childbirth isn't very pleasant. Hades on the other hand was waiting with his mother and catching her up on what he knows of the other Gods and of earth to pass the time while they wait.
Rhea immediately picked up on her new grandchild the moment she was born. A bright, warm, motherly smile contorts her features. "A granddaughter! Oh, I bet she'll be as lovely as her mother when she grows up." She looked over at an aghast Hades and added, "If she looks anything like you, the poor girl will never get a consort." Of course she was only poking fun at her son. Who wouldn't take that opportunity.
"Thanks for that vote of confidence, Mother." Hades sighed and shook his head before looking back at his mother. "Wait, grand...daughter??"
"Yes. You and Persephone have a daughter. You didn't pick up on her gender while Persephone was pregnant?"
"No?" Hades looked as though he was being chastised like a child who didn't do what was told exactly. He had known they were having a child once a soul had left for reincarnation but didn't think to check on anything else of the child.
Rhea just laughs. She knows how hard it could be to just hide the paternal dna from the other gods. "Dear Hades. I'm only giving you a hard time. I have not seen you nor Persephone in so long I can't help myself."
Hades chuckles nervously, a bit embarrassed that he didn't see through his mother's ruse. "Well, we can't exactly keep her anyways. Zeus will throw one of his infamous tantrums if he found out I had a child with Persephone given his newer laws because of Poseidon. I suspect we've only until she is weened and onto a bottle."
"Hmm...." Rhea taps her chin, thinking of what they could do. She discretely looks into her sons mind to get what the fates would have said on the matter being they would be the only ones Hades would even trust with the full truth of any of his recent offspring despite not having much choice.
"The fates had told Persephone and I small riddle of what to do." He looks into the titaness' orbs, seeing the all too familiar expression she had worn when brain diving. "You already know this, don't you?"
"Guilty." Rhea chuckled as she sat at a table. Paper and a pencil appeared in front of her but she did not take the writing tool. Instead, it wrote on it's own as she thought of different ideas, speaking them aloud.
"While you're doing that, I'm going to go see my wife and daughter." Hades spoke as he slipped into the room that they had set up as the nursery. The moment he laid his orbs on her, Hades was already enamored and kicking himself for not going against his brother's ruling. He gently picks her up, cradling the baby in his arms.
An exhausted looking Persephone walks in and places a gentle hand on her husband's shoulder. "What should we name her?"
"Seeing as how stubborn you are and how I tend to get, why don't we name her after that woman who waited for her husband and fought off suiters by being clever." The god couldn't take his eyes off the tiny being in his arms.
"Penelope?" Persephone looked at her with a small smile. "I can see that name suiting her. Whomever adopts her can always shorten her name to Penny or something else. Plus I think she may end up being more like her name sake by finding loopholes around things."
Hades couldn't help but laugh. "And where would she get that from I wonder?" He eyed his wife, knowing she would find a way to visit their daughter now and then.
"I have no idea of what you are talking about. I've done no such thing." She was clearly talking about her most recent endeavor of making winter last longer just so she could have an extra six weeks with her beloved.
"Penelope it is then." Hades smiled again and stared at the infant before pecking her forehead and placing her back in her crib.
Months later, Persephone had been playing with Penny when Rhea came for a visit. The goddess had a feeling she knew what the titan had come for but wanted to be sure. "Hello there, Rhea. What brings you here today?"
"I found a place for Penny to grow up without Zeus knowing where she is. Ironically, the person whom I found to carry out the task of bringing the child to her new home has resemblance to Zeus in the fact he is immortal like us and weilds the power of thunder and lightning." Before either God could interject with their objections, Rhea added, "however, he does show to be as much of a tantrum thrower as Zeus and quite honestly seems to be better off."
Hades was about to rebuttal still but remembered that the fates had said something about someone similar they had to find. "How will we get her there if he even agrees to help?"
"That's where Hypnos comes in." As if on cue, the God of sleep comes in and waves sheepishly at Hades. "I'm sending him into the man's dreams where he can communicate that way."
Hades felt a little unsure about this but knows his son could do it. "Alright. Talk to others there if you can." He looked to his mother to inquire about something else. "Are you able to keep a psychic link while Hypnos is there or no?"
"Of course I can. I'll have you know I'm stronger than I look. I dealt with your father for millennia you know." She set up the link to her chosen for Hypnos to go to and held her grandson's hand to be the gateway between the two.
"Here goes nothing and the hopes they don't kill me once I manifest in the physical realm over there." Hypnos exhaled deeply as he was transported to a distant dream. Where Hypnos ended up was someplace that seemed like it should belong in Earth's history. "Great place to send me, grandma." He rolled sighed, speaking softly as he walked around the place to find who he was there for.
Of course it didn't take long since a man with shoulder length blonde hair was coming down the corridor Hypnos was in, carrying a large hammer engraved with things Hypnos had not recognized. A mental tug told him that this man was the one spoken of. Hypnos stopped and flagged down the man.
"I've not seen you around before. Nor your style of clothing. Where do you hail from?" The blond questioned. His expression was that of curiosity and caution.
"I am Hypnos. In a sense, you can say that I hail from Earth. I've come to your dream per my grandmother's wish to ask for help regarding my little sister." Hypnos feels cutting to the chase would be best at this point.
"Thor. Son of Odin and Frigga. My willingness to help depends on what the help entails exactly. Mortals aren't really allowed here in Asgard unless it is absolutely necessary."
Hypnos nods, understanding where he's coming from. "Fortunately, my sister is not a mortal at all. She could die, of course, but she is still a Goddess born in the Underworld. Like I'm sure it is with you and everyone else here, she would not be so easy to kill once she gets older."
Thor thought for a moment, wanting to help but he wants to know more as to the why this girl has to come to Asgard. "We should speak to my father. He normally has the final say as the king. Are you able to get here outside of dreams?"
With another nod, Hypnos smiles. "Of course. I'm technically already here. Travelling in the dream world is a lot more convenient to me than any other means for long distance." He shifts into a cloud of sand as he exits Thor's mind and into the physical world.
Thor wakes moments later to watch what the man had been talking about. The Asgardian found himself staring in awe as a swirl of sand took Hypnos' form. "Don't let Loki know dream travel is a thing." He led the way to the dining hall where breakfast was being served. "You are welcome to feast whilst you are here. I'm sure you'll find something of interest."
"Thank you." Hypnos took a seat where he could and ate his fill, not wanting to be rude by refusing. He could of course feel eyes on him but he generally stayed quiet with a warm smile. Hypnos definitely felt out of place with his attire but that was the only thing that was really different.
Thor came back and had Hypnos follow him. "Father wants to hear you out." He walked him to the head table and stood off to the side where he grabbed some breakfast for himself and started to eat. Hypnos had bowed respectfully when he reached the table.
"My son says that you are in need of our help? Hypnos, was it?" Odin spoke quietly enough for just those in the immediate vicinity could hear. "For your little sister?"
With a curt nod, Hypnos started his explation. "Yes. My uncles and father are the strongest Gods back home. Uncle Zeus proclaimed a few decades ago that he and his two brothers were to not have many more demigods as they were proving too strong. So as you can surmise, my father having a child that has two God parents sends up a major red flag in Zeus' eyes. On top of this, Poseidon had a child with a mortal not too long ago and started to shirk his duties for a family so Zeus made another decree that Gods aren't allowed to have little to no contact with their children."
Odin had clearly been moved in some way by this. He had never heard of such a thing from all his years of ruling. A child to be forced away from a parent - or parents in this case - with no good reasoning was beyond him. He'd have thought everyone would want more strength in their ranks to protect. Part of him was going to regret asking, but he had to ask, "And what is to become of your sister if we are unable to accommodate for her?"
Hypnos bit back tears, trying to not break composure as the mere thought was terrorizing him. "Zeus will send countless monsters after her until she is dead. This alone is why we can not allow her to be in mortal hands. Most can not see these beasts. Even fewer have the means to defend against them."
Even Loki had a look of disgust on his face. Nobody had deserved a fate such as this. "Has nobody even gone against Zeus? Surely others don't agree with his ruling."
"My father has tried multiple times. All of them ending in failure. But alas Zeus is not all bad. He may have the temper of a spoiled rotten toddler and has a fit when he doesn't get his way but he has kept elemental giants from destroying Earth and the home of the other Gods in our realm."
Frigga peers up from her goblet. She had been silently listening and gathering what she could from their visitors words. "The child can live here. Thor can go with you to retrieve her. From there, we will discuss what to do and see who would be willing to raise her."
Odin wanted so much to speak against his wife's words but he knew better than to argue with the woman. Instead he simply nodded. "At the earliest convenience of the parents." The king looked to his son, waiting to hear some kind of contest over being volunteered.
Thor just huffed, feeling like he had no choice but to go with Hypnos. After swallowing what food was in his mouth he did have a small retort, "You just don't want Loki teaching her how to prank before she gets homed."
"Part of it." Frigga smirked as she sipped on her drink more.
Thor grabbed his hammer and led the way to the bifrost, figuring the dream thing was one way. "How old is your sister anyway if you don't mind my asking?"
"She's only a few months old. Just old enough to be without her mother and be bottle fed." Tears had continued to threaten to fall even now but he bit them back. He would wait until things were all said and done.
"For what it's worth, you'll be welcomed here when you can spare the time to visit. I'll be sure your sister knows of where she came from so that she may never forget." Thor smiled softly as he steps onto the rainbow bridge. "And for if she ever decides to go to earth, my father will see to it that her adoptive parents get her trained with weapons."
"Thank you." Hypnos follows closely. He's confident he could survive the fall but still would rather not risk it. "Truly, this is all greatly appreciated. If there is anything you lot need, don't hesitate to ask. There may be a few exceptions of course but father can usually be reasoned with. Just know if you ever enter the Underworld from it's hidden entrances instead of getting there directly like we will be as soon as we're on Earth, just know you have to pay the ferryman. Unless it's "die and come back!" with him."
"Pay? With what?" Thor was definitely intrigued now. He didn't think there was a way for mortals to even get in.
"Drachmas usually but I think any gold or silver currency could work. I mean millennia ago, mortals would get buried with a coin under their tongue to pay their way." It had been far too long since Hypnos had been able to share a bit of history with someone that didn't know it.
It hadn't been much longer before they reached where Heimdall had been stationed. Hypnos had told him to send them to a forest clearing with little people around as possible for secrecy sake. Heimdall obliged happily and sent them down.
Once on the ground, Thor started to wander off but was quickly met with a minotaur that had been foraging for a few deer. Luckily, the beast too preoccupied to even pay them attention except to accommodate for extra scents in the wood. Taking this as a warning to get away free, Thor stayed close as to not replace the deer. "That is one of the things you were talking about, yes?"
Hypnos looks over after digging out a pair of pearls from his pocket. "Yup. Minotaur. Best to let him hunt unless you want to be his meal." He hands the other a pearl before continuing. "These are the teleport I was talking about. As far as we know, they only work on Earth and in the Underworld. They'll take one to Olympus but just outside of it due to a barrier. What you do is step on it while thinking of the destination you want to go to."
"The Underworld in this case."
Hypnos nods and places his down while holding his foot on it. "You first. Just. Mind the hounds."
Thor took a deep breath and did as told. The feeling of being broken up into about a million bits to be teleported this way was definitely a new feeling. When he was all put back together, a small pack of hellhounds who had grotesque faces started barking as they growled at the sudden arrival.
Hypnos arrived moments later and called off the hounds. "They're this way." He led the way to the living room where Persephone had a bag packed with every trace of her daughter. Introductions had been made while Rhea slumped in a chair to avoid passing out.
"She okay?" Thor asked, concerned.
"Rhea isn't used to using her powers long distance like this to keep her link with Hypnos open this long. She's been using herself as a beacon to help your friend lock onto Earth." Persephone chuckled, handing her a glass of water.
"So just a good rest then?" Thor asks, getting a lazy nod in return as the answer.
Hades handed Penny off to Thor with a somber smile. Surprisingly to the Greeks, Penny didn't scream her head off. No, the child was instead all giggles and playing with the long hair.
"She's..never been this happy with anyone else." Persephone was wide eyed, having an inkling in the back of her mind.
"Normally screaming for hours until one of you two picking her back up? Even if you put her down to get food?" Thor chuckled, having known from stories his own mother had told him.
Both Persephone and Hades nodded. They were shocked to find there was someone else that actually kept her relatively quiet. The two shared a knowing glance. Hades cleared his throat before speaking again. "Her name is Penelope, though Perse has taken to calling her Penny for short. In Greek, her name means weaver."
Thor had to let out a chuckle. It had amused him a little. "Well, we'll have to see what she weaves into as she grows." The pun had definitely not been intended by the God but it was at least a decent one. With the lackluster response he was recieving from the others, Thor took this as a good time to head back to Asgard. "Well, I would do best to head back before the child is found out."
Persephone showed the way towards the door, summoning Charon to take them to the surface. "There's a cloaking spell on her that will last until you leave Earth. I wanted to personally thank you for helping us. We know you didn't have to even listen. If there is anything at all, you know where we'll be." She handed drachma to the ferryman as Thor stepped aboard then placed a bag in the small vessel.
"I will try to use your services as to not draw attention but I will keep that in mind." He sat and held the child close in his arms. She had started to cry but it was short lived once a stuffed dinosaur she showed interest in passed by as they sailed up. Noticing, Thor plucks it out of the air and handed it to her. A sigh of relief exists him when she wraps her stubby arms around what she could of the toy.
At the surface, Thor thanked the man for the trip and headed out. The blinding sun nearly proving to bee too much after being in the dark and gloomy Underworld. Penny had started to wail from the extreme light change. "I know. The sun is being rude and being painful." He smiled, succeeding in calming her. A small whimper left her as she just buries her face into the man's chest. "Hold on tightly, little one. I've not done this with someone so small." Of course, he was confident in getting the both of them to Asgard safely but he still wanted to impress the importance of her not squirming. Once still, Thor swung his hammer and lifted off towards the Bifrost.
Heimdall looked at Thor, wondering what he had been doing with a baby but thought it best not to question it as he knew Thor would tell him eventually. He just closed the gate instead and kept his post.
Frigga immediately strode over to see the child. She had been expecting a child of at least 3 years to be coming into Asgard, not an infant. "She's so young... No wonder they were so desperate to find safety for the poor child." Seeing that she couldn't be more than 6 months old, Frigga knew they'd probably have a hard time homing her.
"Her parents had told of her screaming ears off of anybody they trusted near her to hold her." The thought of a child being picky on who touches her still got a soft chuckle out of him.
"Yet you had no trouble I presume as she was so quiet when you walked in?" A small smile curled her lips, already knowing of the answer.
"As if she didn't have the ability. Only sound I recieved from her at the time was laughter. Let us hope Penny does not oppose to anyone else in the realm."
It would be a week before Thor slowed his process of finding someone to take the young Goddess. Two weeks saw him no longer bothering. It's not that people were willing - they were - Penny just simply seemed to latch onto Thor. He himself had found himself finding it more and more difficult to not become attached and feel as protective over her as if he was her actual father.
As she got older, Penny would build close connections with him and her adoptive grandparents and uncle as they were the only family she knew. Being so close to Thor and seeing him as her real dad despite having been told she was adopted, has led to her becoming a daddy's girl in the words of mortals but that didn't bother her at all. In fact, she embraced it.
