So here's an idea for implementation, I'd like feedback on it :)
Add a data point to the comments database, for "author has read this". Default true for all existing comments, false for comments made after this update.
When the author views the page, it marks all comments as read.
Only the comic's author will be notified in this way. A reader won't be notified if someone replies to their comment.
Should replies also notify the reader who is being replied to? Probably. I could make that work with another "person replied to has read this" data point...
