Pokéwalker

Hey all. I recently started to use the Pokéwalker, but I've noticed it won't track my steps at all while my screen is on. I'll have the screen on to the Pokéwalker page where I can see my pokémon and the area it's in and have it in my pants pocket, but it won't register that I'm walking. I have gps permissions granted for it, but I'm not sure what else to do. Does anyone else have this problem, and can you recommend a solution if you've found one? Thank you so much in advance!
