it also applies to any variant fakemon based off of that pokemon. just as long as they're the same number in the dex!

I have no examples, but I think somewhere on the Wiki it gives an example?
For instance; if Pichu is PotD, then any Pichu variants (surfing/flying etc) will also get the PotD boost :>
Ah, I found the section on the wiki!
"This bonus also affects any variants of the selected Pokémon. (For example, if Voltorb is the Pokémon of the Day, Death Star Voltorb will also get the Pokémon of the Day bonus)"
