Just a quick note on this: distance walked is not tied to who walked it. You could walk it for 500m, then trade it to someone else who walks it for 200m, then releases it, and the person adopting it from the shelter could do the last 300m and evolve it. Point being, you can have someone else walk it for you, then trade it back so you can evolve it yourself. Just a note, not an argument for or against.
